When you create something in ceramics, most of the time you finish off your piece with glaze. The glaze finish can either make your piece look amazing, or it can ruin the entire thing. If you're someone who doesn't like worrying too much, or doesn't have patience to do intricate designs to your glaze, try it with shaving cream! This is just like dipping something into nail polish over water, but with shaving cream. Under glaze is put onto of the shaving cream, then the piece is dipped into the shaving cream and the extra is whipped away. This pieces is coating with clear then, and fired in a kiln. I personally like this, because it makes a piece look like it took awhile to glaze, but was actually very simple. We can do this in class, as long as we bring shaving cream! Another way of adding glaze onto you're piece is to paint the design you want onto it. This only works if you have time to, and the patience. However, this finished effect is very nice, and altogether professional looking! You finish this by firing it in the kiln just like the first example. As long as you have thing paint brushes, you can do this with regular glaze. This one is my personal favorite, since I'm a painter. I think that a piece is more complete once you add the finishing touches of painted design! |
